George Jones Farm Summer Apprentice Intern Positions Available

10 weeks full-time (June to mid-Aug)

Want to get your hands dirty this summer and learn to feed yourself and others?

The George Jones Farm is looking for Oberlin College students who are interested in an intensive hands-on training experience in sustainable agriculture. 

Summer Apprentices will live and work at the farm, participating in all aspects of the farm, from field work and greenhouse care to produce preparation and marketing, working full-time with staff members.  Experiential learning will be complimented by in-field training by staff members as well as self-directed learning through daily study, an independent project, and your very own vegetable plot.

Job Description:

38.5 hours of work per week to include but not limited to: 

  • greenhouse management
  • plant propagation
  • field work:  planting, weed control, irrigation, soil development
  • harvesting and processing produce
  • marketing and customer service (rotating Saturday Farmer’s Market duties)
  • animal care and rotational grazing
  • supervision and mentoring of high school students
  • vermicomposting
  • farm maintenance

Educational Components:

  • 1.5 hours each week dedicated to an independent research project (informational or applied) related to the George Jones Farm and approved by farm staff.  The culmination of the project will be a public presentation of their project in the Fall
  • In-field training by farm staff in techniques and concepts of sustainable agriculture.

Work Requirements:    

  • enthusiasm for sustainable agriculture
  • must be willing to work in all weather
  • must be able to lift 40-50 lbs.

Compensation:

  • $2400 summer stipend
  • housing at the George Jones farmhouse
